Year 9-10

Year 9-102022-09-27T14:34:35+10:00

Year 9 is our final year of Middle School which paves the way for Year 10, our first year of Senior School.

In Years 9 and 10 at Brigidine, our students are guided to be women of determination (strength) and compassion (gentleness) as they are given the opportunity to be more engaged in cultural immersion and social justice.

Year 9 at Brigidine is a period where our young women grow in confidence in their abilities and more broadly in their interests as they explore subjects that connect with their interests and gifts. They are encouraged to achieve their best academically and in cocurricular pursuits including sports. They learn to take responsibility for their own learning and how they can help the welfare of others.

Year 10 is a watershed year for our students as they enter Senior School and can take advantage of numerous new academic options and pathways, work experience and business opportunities. It’s an exciting introduction to the real world. Throughout these two years we continue to support and develop our girls through highly-valued Wellbeing programs that aid their personal development and relationship with faith.

Years 9 and 10 Curriculum Overview

Brigidine College offers Year 9 and Year 10 students enriching and challenging learning in the middle years of schooling to ensure students’ needs are best met. In addition to completing mandated subjects, students can select enrichment subjects that capture their interest and provide opportunities to succeed.

Year 9 and 10 Students at Brigidine – as in Years 7 and 8 – do five subjects that follow the Australian Curriculum framework produced by Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) and developed by the Queensland Curriculum & Assessment Authority (QCAA). Accordingly, we include these mandatory subjects as part of our core compulsory subjects for Years 9 and 10. (See below.)

These subjects continue to develop the seven general capabilities that were a focus of Years 7 and 8, along with three cross-curriculum priorities are:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures

Year 10 – Entering Senior School

In Year 10 our students transition into our Senior School curriculum (Years 10 – 12). It is enriching and challenging as it equips students with the knowledge, understandings, skills and abilities to be successful in their chosen pathway — both in the short and long term. Plus, in addition to diverse academic offerings, Brigidine also provides highly practical educational pathway options (ATAR, VET, SAT) for our young women keen to be more hands on in their learning. Business Openings

Business opportunities abound through work experience programs that start in Year 10 with over 60 prominent organisations across Brisbane, such as media and theatre companies, health businesses, veterinary practices, retail outlets, law, architectural and engineering firms. They continue with additional work exposure through invitational weekends with companies like Technology One (a national IT, ASX Top 200 company).

University Life – Extension programs

Starting in Year 10, students may participate in various extension programs (lectures, tutorials, etc.) run by four of Queensland’s most outstanding tertiary institutions – UQ, QUT, Griffith and ACU. These include head start, acceleration, young scholar and extension studies, allowing Year 12 to do first year university subjects on top of their full Brigidine timetable. As well, students can participate in university workshops like Robogals Asia Pacific, for girls interested in robotics.

Senior Education and Training Plans (SET)

All Year 10 students complete SET Plans, with support from parents and the school to help students map their personal learning pathway during the Senior Phase of Learning. The process allows students to make informed decisions about their futures based on up-to-date information about specific pre-requisites, work expectations and opportunities. While the plan helps students decide on their course of study for Year 11 and 12, they are still flexible enough to allow students to make changes when and if needed.
